Tyrannosaurus
Tyrannosaurus, Osborn, 1905
number on the map: 21
Superorder: Dinosauria
Clade: Saurischia
One of the largest carnivorous theropods. Tyrannosaurus literally means a “giant lizard” and refers to the only representative of the kind – world’s most famous dinosaur – Tyrannosaurus rex (literally “Lizard King”). It lived in North America in the late Cretaceous and became extinct together with other dinosaurs in the great Cretaceous extinction. It moved on two massive legs, and its front limbs were reduced to short paws with two clawed fingers and a residual digit. To this day, there is no certainty what the forelimbs were used for. The largest discovered tooth was over 30 cm long (including the root).
